Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse - support services

Relationships Australia Canberra & Region provides a free comprehensive support service for survivors of child sexual abuse who take part in or are affected by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

We know that hearing about the Royal Commission’s work will be difficult for people who have been affected by child sexual abuse, and speaking with the Commission will be very challenging for survivors.  It may be the first time people have spoken about the abuse, and is likely to bring back memories that are painful.

Our experienced staff can support you during this time through the following services:

  • helping you to cope with the feelings you are experiencing
  • supporting you to prepare to attend the Royal Commission hearings, including statement preparation
  • providing information and advice about the Royal Commission process
  • debriefing and support after attending the Royal Commission
  • supporting you at the Royal Commission hearings where required

We will provide a service even if you are undecided about attending the Royal Commission, or decide not to attend.

About the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse

The Royal Commission will inquire into how institutions with a responsibility for children have managed and responded to allegations and instances of child sexual abuse.

It will investigate where systems have failed to protect children, and make recommendations on how to improve laws, policies and practices to prevent and better respond to child sexual abuse in institutions.

The Royal Commission will look at any private, public or non-government organisation that is, or was in the past, involved with children, including government agencies, schools, sporting clubs, orphanages, foster care, and a variety of religious bodies.
